MIA Long Land lease of our only Airport is counterproductive & goes against our Sovereign state for such a vital gateway to World!. Vienna Airports have never invested in a Master Plan for the entire Airfield, during the last 15 years mostly it was done in an Adhoc Crisis management method. Now General Aviation Park 1 will go to cargo warehousing ...Indeed the Heavy Aircraft Park 4 (I believe 50% Released to MIP) must be retained, built it at SAP!

Great piece Paul !! With some more info it would have been excellent. The problems started way before 7 years ago. With no foresight Hal Far air field was destroyed to make way for the factories. We could have shifted the small private aircrafts there. Chopping our options to sell MIA was never a good idea. The small original military Runway at Luqa 05, is still crying for maintenance let alone upgrading it to the same level as 31 - 13, the main one. Had the flying coffin crash landed on the main runway we would have ended up with a destroyed Touristic season for the whole island. Giving away land around the airport for to private businesses is also a big shortsightedness, since Airport expansions will be highly limited for the future. Destroying Park 4 will be another of our options chopped off.

kimbo slice MIA 'industry leader'? You must be joking. MIA is interested in building more Skyparks and generating revenue from retail outlets and offices more than anything else. Perhaps you should see the figures of how much MIA spends on purely aviation matters and how much it invests in creating more space for retail shops and offices. Then, and only then will you learn where MIA's interests are. You may also want to check how many employees are focussed on aviation and the number employed for non-aviation matters at MIA. And now, Mr Expert, tell us which airport would build on an existing laid-out heavy aircraft ramp instead of besides it. There is no room to build besides Park 4 so to destroy a ramp when parking space is already a headache is pure suicide and just shows how much of an 'industry leader' MIA is. It's more like Missing In Action then anything else. As a purely commercial entity MIA should build its own aircraft parking ramps not destroy existing ones purely for its profits. It also had the cheek to ask for government money to pave an existing perimeter road and soon will go begging for government funds to build ramps after it 'sold' Park 4.

The offices built at Xatt l-Ghassara tat-Gheneb were for the Malta Maritime Authority and it was an excellent move (rather than a mistaken one) for a maritime regulator to be situated in the heart of maritime activity. Can we imagine the Civil Aviation Directorate located anywhere else and not in Luqa? Of course one can but there will be practical issues to say the least. The mistake at the Marsa creek was only committed later when the building, built with the maritime industry in mind, was allocated to the then new Transport Malta, regulating land transport from therein as well.

Well argued, prosit. Building on this space would be folly. The same mistake was made at Grand Harbour where, despite the lack of hinterland for cargo storage, offices were built right on the water's edge (for Transport Malta at the time) when they could have been buit elsewhere. In that case, warehousing facilities were eventually developed between Kalafrana and Ha Far, but as Paul points out, building on this apron would leave Malta without alternatives for aircraft.

Not to mention where should an aircraft carrying hazardous cargo would be parked if not in Park 4!

Whilst the growth forecasts are not to be brushed aside, the doubling of air transport passengers by 2035 is a global forecast, with different geographical world regions registering different shares of growth. It does not automatically mean that by 2035 MIA - as Malta's international gateway - will process double the passengers it is processing. One must not also forget that forecasts remain forecasts, irrespective of the issuer. Using past industry experience as a guide, I am convinced that along the way in their 18 year time-frame, the published forecasts of today (which are plenty) have to be re-aligned. In addition, it does not mean that the related global infrastructure has to double in size. Other measures are adopted by airports worldwide in handling more traffic with the same infrastructural size. Aircraft parking charges policies are one way how to handle growing traffic volumes. I am no spokesman for MIA, but as a professional in the airline/airport industry, I am more than certain that MIA as an industry leader in Malta has its own reliable traffic projections pertaining specifically to Malta, and its own regularly updated plans how to handle local future growth. This without compromising its own regulatory compliance with international standards, and its capability to handle any eventuality on a national level.

One can also add the simulator hangar being built within the precincts of Air Malta's former head office. This land, together with part of the AFM assault course is immedeatly adjacent to the runway/airport and is ideal for airport future expansion, including taxiways and building of a second terminal (low cost?), car parks etc. With this white elephant now in the midst, this has just become more problematic. The simulator hangar does not need to be at the airport in the first place, and was a myopic decision. In fact it would have been better located closer to hotels, say for example the San Gwann industial estate, which would have been an ideal location.
