Hi, As Frank Collier mentions below, the Coimbra was a wreck on Tristan da Cuhna for some years. Please find attached an image taken of it sometime between between 1952 and 1957. Feel free to share, pic credit: P C Neaum or A D I Neaum. All the best Peter G Neaum Hmm. Pic went missing. I'll email it in.

Chris Gryll’s comments have sparked some childhood memories and I well remember several adrenalin-infused, unauthorised visits that my pals and I embark on, in order to play, marvel and fantasise, as little boys do, on the yacht under (never-ending) construction, at Noel Redfern’s home at Amsterdam Hoek. We were well aware that the boat was off limits without adult supervision of course but then adults were always getting in the way of our collective imaginations. Always worrying about our safety and all that boring stuff! I cannot speak with any authority on the subject of the Coimbra but because my late brother, Paul and my cousins, Peggy and Alan Devey, all sailed at ZYC/Redhouse and were close friends with Wally and Hazel Monson, I recall some strident adult discussions with regards to the death of (Vic?) Monson at sea, near Tristan. However, Gordon and Howard (Bossie) Monson, who are well known within the sailing fraternity, live in Knysna and I imagine if anyone can throw any light on the mysteries surrounding the fate of the Coimbra and her crew, it would be them.

Another comment from Chris Grylls: Redfern was involved in engineering supplies as I recall - agencies. He did buy another beautiful boat. Wood this time, Coimbra was aluminium if I am right and that is why she lay beached for so long. The new boat never went to sea but languished in his driveway in Amsterdamhoek for many many years.

An emailed comment from Chris Grylls: COIMBRA belonged to Noel Redfern of Zwartkops Yacht Club. I understood that it was newly built for NR. I do not know about the storm off southern England. As I recall, a lad at the time, she was being sailed back to South Africa via South America and saw a lot of cine footage on the expedition at a showing at ZYC. One instance I remember vividly was half the crew getting into the boat's tender in mid South Atlantic to take film of the boat being sailed past by the other half of the crew. All well until they lost sight of the tender and took quite some nerve wracking time to find it again. Or so we were told. One crew member, (Vic?) Monson, was lost overboard and it was in a storm near Tristan. A hurricane I don't know but I do recall that there was some controversy about her beaching/wrecking. I met one of the crew in LM in mid sixties at an international Flying Dutchman week and cannot remember his name. But what I do remember was that he was very bitter about the last part of the voyage. Ray Langton of ZYC was reputed to have contracted polio as a result of trauma that they suffered in the last stages of the voyage.

An emailed comment from Frank Collier: Hi Maurice As a small boy of about 7 - 1953 - I well remember standing next to my Dad at the radio shack on Tristan da Cuhna in the dark - and very stormy - night as two Island boats - made of driftwood and canvas and painted white with a red and a blue stripe - rowed out into the Atlantic to take Coimbra in tow; the Islanders were marvelous seamen. She was brought to anchor in due course but several days later went aground on what was then known as Big Beach, in mysterious circumstances; as kids we used to play in the wreck which lay on the black sand beach; it wasn't far from the shute that carried the hot crayfish bodies from the canning factory above the beach; when peckish we would break off a leg or two and have a feast while messing about on the boat; for some reason, the memory of the heads sticks in my mind. In 1962 a volcanic eruption occurred which I think covered Big Beach - and the boat - in lava; but I could be mistaken about that. It might be worth contacting Tristan - try list@tristantimes.com; they would undoubtedly have a better idea of what eventually happened to the boat. I would be interested in following your progress in your Coimbra quest.

In Suid-Afrika was hy 'n huishoudelike naam gemaak), in plaas van streng bestraf.

We want him to explain how he got the British Knight accolade. As far add we know, this recognition is given to someone who will have fought and won battles for the queen. Mugabe must explain to us which battles he fought and won for the queen. WHEN DID THE MATEMADANDAS LEARN ABUT THIS ACCOLADE? ITS GOOD THEY ARE ON THE OTHER SIDE NOW BUT THEY ALSO NEED TO APOLOGISE FOR THE VIOLENCE AND KILLINGS THEY DID WHEN THEY WERE ON THE SAME SIDE WITH THE MUGABE THEY DENOUNCE TODAY. we also don't trust them, why should we trust them today?

Mr Log Cutter as long as you know plotting to overthrow a " democratically and constitutionally elected" Mugabe is treason. You created the status quo where Mugabe is now a " God". What has gone wrong with " VaMugabe chete" mantra. You maimed killed and destroyed livilihood of innocent civilians. Whose "crime"was to say what you are saying today. As I write I have never heard an apology from you about the evil you commited on innocent citizens. Today some areas in Zimbabwe are still no go areas for some citizens since you declared them Zanu Pf strongholds. You ripped our social fabric. Turned people against each other in support of Mugabe. Now the tables have turned you want to make noise. We peace loving Zimbabweans have come to accept Mugabe as our President for life. Anyone who tries to change that will meet us there. We cant be continually be brutalised by a few war vets as if they own this country. We are prepared to go to the " bush" in defence of our President whom you forced on us. Tavakuda manje Mugabe wacho!!!!!. Kkkkkkkkkk.

Option 1 Payment to Contract Company which employs 5 people to clean varsity is R100,000pm Workers get 5,000 each = R25k. The rest 75K to white people & kick back to person who gave you the contract. Option 2 Employ the 5 people direct & pay them 8000 x 5 = R40,000pm + R10k for materials. Varsity saves 50% . Everyone is happy until......after strike for uniforms....LOL

Its so painful and unacceptable for our parents to earn such a peanuts but I don't see them surfacing in this strike due to the following; 1. The contractor is already going to loose the contract, it will only survive if the big boss is one of the university executive. 2. The employees are employed by the said contract and not the University. 3. The only thing which the cleaning contract must do is to fix issues that concerns their employees. 4. I am an ANC member and I love ANC, but I am afraid to tell that sub-contracts from security, cleaning, plumbing, electrical you name the lot, the are owned by top ANC members. 5. I can bravely tell that about 20 companies has already submitted their tenders to take over from the present contract, since the strike doesn't involve the University. 6. These employees are going to be out of the Job if their company and not university fails to resolve the problem. 7. If the university decides to employ the strikers, all private companies are at risk. 8. Once Malema (EFF) decide to join and support the strikers (because he believe in commotions), the situation will be out of control. 9. We are heading to festive season, a season that need money and I am sorry to see what is going to happens to family of the strikers. 10. I beg the University to at least speak to the service provider and convince them to meet the needs of the strikers or they lose the contract. I maybe wrong!!!
