Sorry Bongani, you are wrong. Farm people are killed 450% more than other South Africans. They ARE being targeted. They are more important, strategically they are key citizens because they are food producers. In other countries at war, farmers stay at home and are not called up because they are identified as strategically key. Lets admit some facts and just keep old resentments out of this.

Bongani check this collage I put together for you as as you have never seen any anti-white hatred speech and incitement of violence against whites! First off... I strongly condemn what those bigoted racialist whites did to that guy... even if he was suspected of theft that was no way to treat a human being or take law into their hands. The picture collage is supported by a SABC TV News video segment (I only attached the still image of that segment) and which shows the placard held by the same EFF supporter wearing a "VOTE FOR EFF" Shirt and wearing a EFF hat among other EFF supporters wearing hats and berets all with EFF logos... all this in front of EFF Leadership addressing the crowd from their "mobile stage platform" all decked out in EFF colors and logos. Then look at picture taken same day and note a guy dressed in an old police or SADF tunic who has attached WHITE BABY DOLLS to a pole representing white babies... he then went around inviting protestors to hit the dolls signifying violence against whites. Now if you don't find that offensive... ask the question... WHAT IF A WHITE DID THIS WITH BLACK DOLLS AND WENT AROUND ASKING PEOPLE TO HIT THOSE BLACK BABIES?? There'd be huge reaction from you and many others! Including many whites! And you know what? Radio 702, you and not one black found that offensive that day... now talk about twisted racialist minds with evil intent! anna paquin

First off..., I strongly condemn what those bigoted racialist whites did to that guy... even if he was suspected of theft there was no way to treat a human being. BUT Sello, Sello... you are so in denial. I know you must be very embarrassed that the people you support are such hypocritical bigoted racialists... There they are making such "intelligent" radical and militant speeches about ALL whites being racial supremacists and being Hitler followers etc, while THEY THEMSELVES are shouting anti-white slogans and brandishing KILL WHITE placards! I put a little picture collage together supported by a SABC TV News video segment and which shows the placard held by the same EFF supporter wearing a "VOTE FOR EFF" Shirt and wearing a EFF hat among other EFF supporters wearing hats and berets all with EFF logos... all this in front of EFF Leadership addressing the crowd from their "mobile stage platform" all decked out in EFF colors and logos. This is the SABC NEWS segment go to 04:37 0nwards and check upper left corner and see the KILL WHITE placard being brandished in front of the mobile stage with all its EFF leaders and signage! See the video still of that segment. Then look at the picture taken the same day at the same anti-white protest and note a black has attached WHITE BABY DOLLS to a pole representing white babies... he then went around inviting protestors to hit the dolls signifying violence against whites. Not one person found that offensive... now talk about twisted hate filled racialist minds with evil intent! NOW that I have dealt with that... lets address your racialism and bigotry addressed at me! You know nothing about me other than my skin color and due to your own denial about a simple picture and matter of FACT... YOU ARE JUDGING me as "having a twisted mind filled with hatred and only sees evil"... based on my skin color! Step to the nearest mirror and tell that to your own reflection. anna

Oh David, David! You really must be desperate! I did watch the video you suggested and other videos on the Middleburg protests. That picture you posted does not come from any of the protests. No one in any of the videos is holding that poster. No one in the videos actually looks like the people in your poster! is your mind so twisted with hatred that you see evil even when there is none?

paquin Are you trying to incite something with your statement of "White comments are missing!" ? The farmers are genuinely scared man, home invasions are terrifying all round, however on farms they're usually gruesomely violent. Yes some farmers are racist scumbags and some morons also brought the old SA flag to the marches, others do make use of the dop system, but not all farmers are racist, why does society feel like they can paint them all as barefoot afrikaaner racists that can be dismissed? The farmers and those that work on their farms live in relative isolation which make them all softer targets than most, that's a fact. "Bingwa goes on to say #BlackMonday is a display of how some lives are more valuable than others" - What about the #Blacklivesmatter marches? Those marches were held for a good reason, there were many black people in the States that were victimized by people in authority and that sentiment was felt and supported globally, however the #Blacklivesmatter marches weren't without incident, many degenerated into looting, violence and property destruction. Just as the #BlackLives marches had rogue violent and idiotic elements that unfortunately detracted from the core message, the same happened with the #BlackMonday marches, some farmers were morons. That said Mr Bingwa and @007Operative:disqus, why is a march for black lives and rights okay (which it really is, their voice and concerns must be heard), but a march for farm murders and farmers safety is labelled as indicating farmers feel their lives are more important than others?

What one writes is part of the personal ethics of a person. Unfortunately in Malta we are not averse to crude gossiping and being inconsiderate in hurting the feelings of others and yet we immediately take umbrage if we are personally even slightly slighted. The maxim of what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander certainly doesn't seem to apply in how we perceive what freedom of speech is all about. Also one of the fundamental reasons why ethics does operate in practice is not some higher order form of ideal behavior but simply the realization of the maxim "Do not do to others what you don't want done to you and your beloved.". Otherwise the time will come when you suffer the consequences.

Great article as usual from this very talented journalist. During the time of this stupid government in power, we have seen so much hate, but people are ready to fight back!!! Tony Zarb was a hamster during the 25 years of peace and tranquility. He was hardly even heard of, because he did not have the heavy hand of his labour government to back his ass!!! Now it's a free for all, so freedom of speech or not, the hate is still spread. What does that tell us. You guess!!!

When Zarb targets some badly chosen barbs and hurls them against PN women, all hell breaks loose. He is vilified, his clothes are hypothetically (although I could not know what was really in his accusers mind!!!) torn off him and stones are raised high ready to strike; and the President is damn requested to shorn him of any honours. When DCG used to do worse to both men and women of a different political persuasion she was glorified as an "investigative", "no holds barred", "true, upright, honest to goodness and sweet as a Mars bar" journalist. Given the vitriol and the pure hatred that has been aimed at Michelle Muscat - by wannabe politicians, wannabe "musicians" and hate bloggers, Tony Zarb's comment was mild, to say the least. The women who felt so insulted by Zarb never stood up for Michelle Muscat - even when vicious and sick comments were made against her whilst she was raising funds for charity. Once they found the insults against Michelle Muscat acceptable, nay, hilarious, it is only fair that they are subjected to the same themselves.

This is what I wrote and what was removed by the "freedom of speech" loving Malta Independent on the publication of the names of the persons who were to address yesterday's demonstration in Sliema. "Andrew Borg Cardona - is this the lawyer of the "bitch" and "mof" refined speeches and the one wearing a hat and with the outstretched arm during the rendition of the Maltese National Anthem in front of the Law Courts - which he thinks are his personal domain?" This was accompanied by a picture showing this refined lawyer at the protest in front of the Law Courts.

Freedom of speech in Malta is a political aberration:if you attack someone : its freedom of speech: if they attack you, its abuse! The late DCG blogs-RIP- were NOT a good example of freedom of speech; if anything these blogs were a caricature of freedom of speech ! No dissenting comment was ever tolerated! As for Zarb,s comments these are as abusive as Bocca,s rantings against labour bitches, and mother f.ckers; and as hateful as the late DCG's abuse against Labour women-( including President) humiliated and described in the most degenerative terms: low IQ,fat, short, bogans: in speech, clothing attitudes, unrefined, whores, corrupt, sluts running after married men etc etc! I wonder if any of the foreign journos have ever read any of her blogs!

Indeed, the answer to your first question lies within. The freedom in and of itself is absolute. He is perfectly free to say what he wants; and in fact he did. He was not prevented from saying what he wished to say. This question as to consequences is different. Was it insensitive? I jolly well think so, but one can live with that ultimately. However, where free speech intrudes over other rights, then the law kicks in - hence the Criminal Code articles being cited as breached by this charming gentleman. And here is the key point: it is only the law that gives and restrains the right to express oneself. If you feel aggrieved, take it up before the courts; but do not block free expression at the outset - in a worst case by eliminating the voice completely. It is sad to have to be discussing these basic tenets of democracy in 2017. We are forest dwellers ultimately. Not sure what we’ve been doing in the EU these past 13 years.

30/10/2017

M Camilleri

M Camilleri

Free speech has its limitations, in that it is balanced against the right to be protected against hate speech, threats of violence, defamation etc. Mr. Zarb’s comments, seeing his role as a public figure and the context in which is was said, could have been perceived by the women there as a threat — they are prostitues, traitors and assassins. What does one do with women like that? His comment of ‘I am sure they will some someone to warm them up’ ... could be felt to have undertones of the kind of sexual violence threats women receive. If he did not think that some would feel that way, then he is even more stupid than he looks. No, it’s not a cotton-wool generation of women who are over sensitive. It’s a generation of women fed-up of being threaten to shut up (jew nigi ghalik u nifqak - said in parliament in 2016), of being told they are sluts, of perpetrators of domestic violence being lightly punished and of not being taken seriously. Do not compare Chetcuti’s onion comment to this, just for the sake of sounding non-partisan because there is a gulf of difference in the the context, meaning and underlying intent. One is threatening, the other is an insult.

Freedom of speech is freedom of speech. Its either you accept it or you don't but certain people want it one way. I answer posts in the times of malta and malta independent without insulting anyone but I am totally blocked by the times of malta and sometimes blocked by malta independent. And one can see the editors of these dailies in the front line protesting for freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in Malta has an agenda from certain quarters.

I agree with much of what has been said, however, comparing tony zarbs post to kristina chetcuti's is not right. One post is criticisizing a public figure appointed politically, the other is criticisizing civil protestors. Very different. Secondly, the fact that Zarb remains unpunished for such comments by his employers (joseph muscat only condemned after being questionned by journalists and after comparing it to other comments) also goes to demonstrate the state of the country. Free for all where no one is responsabile for their actions. But when you have yoir right hand minister and chief of staff caught with their pants down opening tax exading structures and nothing is done, than it is hard to imagine anyone bearing responsability for anything.
