I will believe 65 million unofficially but not 100 million. 100 million would be Mexico and you can easily see the difference between 65 and 100 million people. It still is a little hard to believe that SA has a higher population than the UK but it is about six times the size.

For as long as many companies operate in the old mindset of only caring about the bottom line, not investing in people, hiring the cheapest (and often most incompetent) IT people, these kinds of things will continue to happen. Try explaining to an "old school"* business owner why he needs to spend money on security and risk management and see what happens. He will tell you go get stuffed. * Old school business owner: One of those, that started a company somewhere between 1981 and 1989, is an old hand at tax avoidance, the company is still a close corporation and runs two sets of books. Oh and he treats his staff like it was in 1985 when the BCEA was a pipe dream.

01/11/2017

Thank you for your explanation. I am not convinced that hacking is the same as social engineering like scams or Phishing or manipulation or just plain lying to obtain information. Hacking has always traditionally been associated with computer and network jail breaking, rooting etc. The standard definition is: "Hacking is an attempt to exploit a computer system or a private network inside a computer. Simply put, it is the unauthorised access to or control over computer network security systems for some illicit purpose." Of course people will always want to add their understanding to any word or phrase to suit themselves and these new meanings stick with some people.

hacking is an art, typically broadly considered to mean- taking something, be it a network, a device, a computer, and make it work in ways never intended nor envisioned by the manufacturer. In short- WARRANTY VOID WHEN COVER REMOVED. Social engineering is one form of hacking. Its considered in and amongst the basics as its the easiest skill to learn first.

Many people die and are born each year, in case you didn't know. Many of these records belong to deceased individuals. Also, records related to eg. cellphone contracts would also lead to inflated numbets because mobile penetration in SA is above 100%. I hate myBBs horrible reporting just as much as the next guy, but this isn't an error. Please check your facts before polluting comments sections with unnecessary bullsh!t.

I agree that line was horrible. It'll be 75m records, but many of them will be 2+ of the same south african. In fact I'd say it'll be about 5-10 per person of about 7m-14m citizens.

"Subsequent investigations revealed that the company’s live database was also vulnerable, exposing the records of over 75 million South Africans." This again? The census claims there are 55.91 million South Africans. Do MBB conduct their own census? Sorry, but trolls and fake accounts do not count as real people.

Firstly they need to start making executives personally criminally and financially liable when data gets stolen. Once we start throwing top executives in jail and ruining them financially they'll start being more careful with people's data. But since data is already leaked companies need to use better verification methods, and don't use easily discovered information as the answers to your existing verification questions.

One could argue semantics, but they basically provide credit vetting and ID vetting. http://www.dracore.co.za/services/verification-pre-screening-of-customers When a client gives you their details you need to check whether the information is correct. We help you do that quickly and efficiently. Dracore’s verification services are there to ensure its clients adhere to the FICA requirements to “Know Your Client” (KYC) by establishing and verifying the identity of all clients prior to establishing a business relationship or concluding a transaction. Background Checks: Dracore’s verification services go so far as to provide background checks on companies as well as individuals. Credit Checks (with Consumer Consent): Credit Checks can be provided on receipt of signed consent from the individual under enquiry. They should never have been in possession of so much data in the first place, and by that I mean data per individual. No single entity should have all that data per person.
