So why don't the white farmers leave already!? Once they leave, there will be no more food for the SA population, at all. I can already hear them begging the UN for support because they are starving.

The chinese ( no I won't capitalize it ) are vipers to begin with . My sister has been married to one for 30 years . Unspeakable people . I don't care what anyone else thinks , I know what they are capable of . Not sure if they are even human . Sister regrets it now 29 years too late but after the entire family + friends - no thanks . Weird ,secretive people w/ ZERO emotion except to yell. That they would do this to an elephant does not surprise me .

its time for humanity to recognise the true value of elephants as wild, rather than some financial gain from such atrocity. Under what authority is this allowed to happen? does it reflect the true voice of the people of Zimbabwe or specific interest of a few individuals. It is time to make choices as a species that recognise the inherent interdependence of all life, to make choices that are win win for all life, rather than those that are leading to extinction of species an ultimately the demise of ourselves. These choices need to recognise the needs of the indigenous peoples and give them endeavours, and work that is aligned with the highest good. Wildlife have their own rights, let us honour life.

It is so so upsetting that Africa’s leaders allow its wildlife to be depleted by China and its neighbours. How are Conservation efforts supposed to keep up with the daily killing and selling of Africa’s wild animals?

I think (me, me, me!), therefore I am ...

Francis S Collins (The language of God, London: Pocket Books, 2007) skryf: "Humans and chims [chimpanzees – "our closest living relative[s]", p 137] are 96 percent identical at the DNA level" (137). "At the DNA level, we [humans] are all 99.9 percent identical" (125). '[A] tiny fraction (0.1 percent) of the human DNA ... differs from person to person" (240).

Hi Rachel Brilliant. Your rendition brought back many great memories of similar experiences. Ours were in the Serengetti. I'm 58 now so I suppose they were in the late 60's/earley seventies. We live in Scotland now but Africa is still the biggest part of my life. Still have that layer of dead skin on the bottoms of my feet from all the years of barefoot traveling. Loved the bit about Takkies. I came to boarding school in the uk and can remember the first gym period we had the guy asked where my PLIMSOLES were. I was barefoot. I just fell about, from that moment on subconciously I swore never to become a pom. Plimsoles I mean there's only one word for it Takkies. We've kind of compromised now it's sports shoes. We used to eat meallies (corn on the cob) for the uneducated. When ever we arrive in Nairobi it's just there in the air and first port of call is the nearest street vendor usualy the same wee guy. We get the same toothless welcoming smile and a harty chuckle. Tickles him pink that we come to him before any where else. I could go on for eternity Rachel. Great to know there's some one else out there who had some great if not hair raising experiences. Here's to you & yours Rachel. Good luck Bob Axten

Wow!! How awesome!! I was born & raised in California (USA) & only dream of things like this! I can recall being fascinated with big cats since I was a little girl. My ultimate dream is to visit South Africa & see the wildlife. Just wow!

Nice story, though not dated. The B&W photos make it look older than it actually is,and judging by the Land Rover, a 1994 and onwards 300TDi powered vehicle (air intake on right hand fender) the story cannot be older than the mid-90's. That was a time that overland and camping floodgates from SA really opened up on the unsuspecting and trusting African scene! How things have changed in less than 20 years.

What a fantastic story, Rachel. I love the big cats, their appearance complete a safari to me. Their roars make a dark night very special. Some years ago I was camping at Xakanxa. I'm afraid of elephants, and it totally freaks me out when they come grazing in the camp site at night. And we had a tiny tent at the time so I'd lie awake crossing my fingers that no one of them would be clumsy enough to step wrongly and smash us under that flimsy plastic sheet. To feel more protected I insisted on putting the car on the one side, and a tree on the other. My husband, born and bred Namibian and way more hardcore than I am safari-wise, would laugh and shake his head, but went along with my camp site arrangements to keep family peace. That night, squeezed between the Land Cruiser and a huge tree, we experienced basically exactly the same as you did in 3rd Bridge. Except that they didn't steal our clothes. We woke up from something running into the car on the other side, and then all hell broke lose! Initially we though it was the hyenas that harassed us during dinner, but the roars were unmistakable and so ridiculously loud and close! We managed to sneak from the tent and into the car, crawling in from the backseat door, and when we turned on the car lights, 12 lions were tearing apart a bushbuck in front of us, 5-10 meters away from the car. It's by far the most intense safari experience I've ever had. And I will never, ever forget it. It was easy to convince my husband to go for a roof tent after that. http://www.denafrikanskefarmen.com/2010/06/14/here-i-am-where-i-ought-to-be/ In Norwegian, unfortunately...but at least there is a picture.
