bundesliga topscorer If you follow the sequence of events, the government only called a snap election because and when the Catalan leader declared independence and not because of the October 1st, Catalonia only, election, which was declared unconstitutional by the Spanish high court.

I agree. But then would the government have agreed to call an election unless the Catalans would not have called an unofficial one on October 1st? 😉

Catalonia only enjoyed a degree of auto-government, but the absolute government in Spain is Madrid. bundesliga

He and the CATALONIA authorities were and are on the LAW, right side Where democracy reign incarceration does not exist, nor a Spanish junta enforce illegal conditions and police trample on free population exercising their rights

Given Spain’s history of using violence to suppress internal dissent, Rajoy now is trying to gain control via an election. After failing to totally suppress the 1st October referendum, via police brutality (and after the Catalan head police, refused to comply to Madrid), the Catalans voted for independence. Puigdemont then undeterred by the election next month called Rajoy's bluff, thinking that Madrid would gain control over the situation. Now the only issue would be to determine if a free and unsuppressed elections would take place. As Stalin once wrote, it is not who votes that count, but who counts the votes! Rest assured of a hefty budget from Madrid to selected parties in Catalonia and the mass media to garnish control in the coming elections.

Could it be that the October 1st election was not an official election held by the only recognised government in Spain?

So, my question is this. If the election on October 1 was deemed to be illegal by d Spanish courts why would d courts now decide that the one due to be held on December 21 should be legal?

I would say anyone, no matter his age, would try to avoid a 30-year incarceration; however, if this 55-year old wanted to avoid incarceration, he should have stayed on the good side of the law.

Maybe that's why last Sunday tens of thousands turned up in Barcelona to celebrate the Madrid government - in other words, Spanish unity.

At first that's what I thought... but then if he is to be a 'free' candidate in the forthcoming election he has no choice but to leave his homeland. While I'm really very sorry to see the beginning of the possible disintegration of Spain, I can understand that some Catalans, like us Maltese, wish to be a sovereign state. The best option in the circumstances, would be more autonomy - with more say in how their GDP is shared with the rest of Spain. This should augur well for renewed friendly ties between Madrid and Barcelona and also continue to foster the ideal of unity in diversity so dear to us all in the EU. A prosperous and happy Iberian peninsula is something all the EU states should work for.

The man is nearly 55 years of age. To seek to avoid a possible 30 year incarceration seems to me totally understandable.

The October 1st Catalonia referendum was a shame on the Madrid government when police attacked the people and polling stations. That's what is called democracy in Spain as an EU member country. Shame on you Mariano Rajoy
