honeymoon bora bora For the greater good . . . of what?! How do you equate that with the starvation of millions? Exactly how good is it that production falls as a direct consequence of the execution of your political conviction? I thought the unfed downtrodden masses were the first consideration. Poor much maligned commies. Get a life! You see, all these political engineering schemes have one thing in common. They go against man's free will and enterprise. So, what price your free will when someone else dictates to you? Since the socialist credo goes that anything goes, what happens when it turns on you? Any idea when that can happen? Any guarantee that it won't? The receiving end has a definitely different taste.

The revolution was actually started in February / March by a popular uprising which resulted in the Tsar abdicating and a (more) democratic government under Kerensky took over running the country. The Bolsheviks under Lenin did actually start a second revolution in October (the one the communists celebrate) which replaced the Kerensky government with Lenin's.

honeymoon bora You list a lot of examples but you don't link show the causal link between how communism or socialism causes political collapse. I'm not going to repeat myself or prove you wrong on every exhaustive list of fallacies you present. Either reply to my points specifically or make a convincing argument that isn't just "communism equals corruption, end of story". You're not convincing anybody but yourself. There are always external factors and the world economy causes things like oil price fluxuations. I don't see you mention Nigeria's slump here.

If you have time, please Google "Why socialism", an 1949 essay by Albert Einstein. We all know who love to use the word "social", from communist to capitalist. Socialist is the opposite from these corrupt criminals and use "social" to polish their crumbled images. A socialist sympathizes with humanity and gives a helping hand.

The October Revolution celebrated by communists actually had nothing to do with communism, it was a popular revolt by ordinary people against the Tsar. When it succeeded nobody quite knew what to do. They even tried to install a similar system the Tsar had (white Russia). It was Lenin, with the aid of German money, that eventually took control and murdered all potlical opponents.

It is an inescapable fact that, when countries fall under the socialist yoke, their citizens become slaves, wishing to escape to the "west". One cannot blame external circumstances, as countries like the two post-WWII Germanies, north and south Koreas and north and south Vietnams were "experiments" using the same peoples from the same economic starting points. Other include China and Taiwan (and for a while, Hong Kong); China itself went through a growth spurt after rejecting the worst Mao excesses and reintroducing more market-orientated policies. Indeed, Lenin's Marxist paradise only survived because he introduced a — ahem — New Economic Policy [covert capitalism]. Cuba generated scores of refugees fleeing to the West as did Zimbabwe while Venezuela, after its glorious Chavez Moment is battling with food shortages, strikes, etc and Brazil is enmeshed in corruption scandals as well. The reasons include: "All power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" (with the ZANC as proof) Central decision makers often get it wrong, often through incomplete information or "fighting the last war". Eskom's load shedding fiasco is an example "Too many eggs in one basket" means greater risk to the economy. Eskom, again. Centralisation and state ownership & regulation leads to concentration and concentration, without competition, leads to inefficiencies and complacencies. (SA's SOEs, Big Banks, Big Comms, Big Audit are all walking proof) People are selfish and produce more when they can reap the benefits. Adam Smith's "invisible hand".

it is true to say that communism and socialism have failed world wide. a long list of failures is possible. The theory is Utopian as Utopian was Plato's theory on a 'perfect' democracy (platonic democracy). Plato ended up as slave when he started, and was saved by his friends when they ransomed his captors. In practice such 'perfection' doesn't exist. When the Athenians introduced Parliamentary Democracy (PD) there was no Parliament of course, or political parties those days, soon they discovered that demagogues or orators can easily mislead people for various causes, beneficial to themselves or to a narrow clique. This was a recipe for disastrous decisions for Athens and it did. Most of the Citizens were in heavy debt to lenders-the aristocracy and the powerful of those days. To repay their debt it was very difficult, therefore they became serf's to the lenders. Serf is one step away from slave. Eventually the Athenians decided they can't continue like that and therefore asked Solon, one of their philosophers and prominent Citizen, for a solution. He subsequently introduced the concept of Constitutional Democracy (CD). A set of laws that would protect the City and Inhabitants from demagogic influences. These laws were inviolate. The Romans also followed the example for 400 years before they became an Empire. Subsequently many Countries. Today are many Constitutional Democracies, including SA. The concept is ideal also for mixed societies and cultures (USA, Germany etc). The easiest then way to influence decisions suitable to a clique or special interests is to reverse or cancel Judiciary laws, acting as an impediment. The concept of socialism and Communism had started in order to correct injustices etc at that point in time. However, again in practice became tools for the elected elites to promise NIRVANA to their Citizens and

Who's not to say that wouldn't have happened under democracy? The Soviet power structure was based on universal suffrage since 1917 as it was after all a populist uprising. That Stalin subverted the industrial prowess instituted by Lenin into an absolutist police state is more indicative of consolidating control and compensating for the ideological animosity with the West, than a direct result of collectivism. That animosity can likewise be blamed for the annexation of Balkan states and others behind the iron curtain as a measure of defense, to no real military opposition. Germany never adopted collectivism, but used socialism as a bandwagon to depose its monarchy.

Hitler was a Nazi - that's a contraction for National Socialist right? Mother Russia's biggest hurdle to success was the mothers running the place, a sociopathic dictator and a few feeble-willed lackeys chosen because they didn't stand up to him; a country, nay a vast collective of socialist states (USSR) that took over vast swathes of the earth can hardly blame being ostracised for its woes! Solzhenitsyn was right.

Shallow, symptomatic assessment of socialism. It's days like these I wonder if the whole internet isn't just debate baiting. Communism was vilified and ostracised militarily since its inception as cultural heresy. There were bad years (especially in the formative years). Was the Wild West a nice place to live? Or the middle ages in general? I scoff at blaming Hitler on socialism instead of nationalism. Mother Russia's biggest hurdle to success has always been ostracisation, to no fault of its own.

Good article. You judgement of these ideological freaks is much too kind. They should all be prosecuted for gross human violations, Even those that are long dead like Stalin should be prosecuted by the international criminal court. Only by exposing these atrocities and keeping them alive in the human mind, will we have a chance of not having them repeated endlessly by tinpot dictators like Mugabe and Zuma.

Great article Tony, a question that we face each day as we are safari operators operating in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve and iSimangaliso Wetland Park. We meet clients wanting only to participate in a game drive and then their are the clients that are not convinced that they should go on a organised safari, they would prefer a self drive safari. I personally think the largest advantage of a organised safari is that the rangers have a good knowledge of the area and movement of the animals should they be passionate about the area in which the work. Please don't get me wrong a self drive gives one a lot more freedom and of course a good chance of seeing some amazing sights. However their seems to be an enormous difference in cost when it comes to a luxury lodge on a privately owned reserve versus companies that offer safari outings to national parks. Thanks again great article.

But I finished by asking my self is that a must or maybe Iam loosing the plot but than again I switch on my TV to check if I heard that speech correctly & Mr Pace yes I wasn’t loosing my mind My God they instigating hate in my beautiful country .
