Of course once again this is only a single case, you cannot shear them over one comb (lump them together), in general the refugees are well adapted, in many cases beter educated than the ethnic Germans, the crime rate is sinking and Germany can breathe a sigh of relieve again. So the narrative goes, and a large part of the population is living in the Valley of the Ignorant because they only follow the public broadcasters and the local rags and what is being taught at school. In my experience there still remain enough people who for news purposes are not computerwise and try to avoid technology and difficult politics if they do not need to do so. Dresden once was called The Valley of the Ignorants, as they could not receive Western TV broadcasts during GDR times. Those closer to the West-German borders could. It seems that the tables have been turned today. Parts of the former GDR are not ignorant anymore, but it seems the same could not be said for the affluent Western-Germany. As in South Africa it is panem et circenses - in South Africa rugby, in Germany soccer and endless mindless talk shows on TV.

stages of mitosis Oh gosh, Christi - all hell will break out ... They have conniptions over buses/metered taxis where people pay, can u imagine the furore when they find out there's the option of free travel????? I'm surprised the taxi associations haven't banned/protested/shot people using their legs to walk.

How would "unemployed' be defined? Not employed in the formal sector - with SARS registration, paying UIF, etc, etc - but what about people who legitimately try to earn a living in the informal sector? Thieves, hijackers, rapists, murderers, hitmen, drug dealers, pimps and prossies - would they be considered as 'employed'?

Considering unemployment is at a all time high this is a great initiative. But I realize at the same time that there will be many negative comments. As there always is. But I do agree with the comments below from @dontchimpout:disqus @disqus_ZtdyuktIj8:disqus

Ok let me spell it out .......they sell their cattle which they own (capital assets), sometimes after walking them enormous distances over desert-like conditions which considerably reduces the profit they might get from them. They do not live on fresh air even though the life is supposedly so idyllic. And finally do you or I need Converse shoes and DSTV? As this conversation isn't really going anywhere I will conclude with what I think is an interesting fact... you will notice in the pictures that the little boys have no hair except a top-knot and the girls have lovely long hair. The little boys' heads are shaved in order to provide hair for their sisters' to weave into their own.

There is nothing in this photo essay which would lead me to believe the Himba are capitalists, nor in need of Converse shoes and DSTV, as you contend. Further, might I suggest a quick perusal of the Wikipedia entry for Himba? You would seem to be in need of some understanding of their culture, tribal structure, and history. Cheers.

17/08/2013

They ARE capitalists.......Wiki definition "Capitalism is an economic system in which capital assets are privately owned and items are brought to market for profit".

So your contention here is that in order not to be marginalized, these people have to become capitalists? Sorry, but that is a crock.

mitosis Hmmmm.......don't mean to turn my nose up at the beautiful national geographic-style article but the fact is that a large reason why the Himba maintain their "traditional lifestyle" is that they have been marginalised by the Namibian government because they are not Owambos and didn't vote for Swapo. "Modern influences and outside interference" could also mean education and healthcare to which they have very little access over vast stretches of their territory. I'm sorry but I get very irritated with the myth that traditional societies live idyllic lives while the rest of us corrupt them. It's a load of b**** because of course they are perfectly aware that they are missing out on clean water, Converse shoes and DSTV - if you go to any one of the small towns in the areas where they live and see what people buy after they have sold some cattle, it is perfectly clear that we are all human and would all equally like access to all the nice things we (and elite Namibians who voted for Swapo) for granted. Perhaps if the Namibian government just gave them better access to markets that would be a start....

Candice Young

The fact that they have been able to keep to this way of life for such a long time is truly astounding! I only hope the modern influences and outside interference will not ruin their culture going forward.

To occupy public space for whatever reason requires a permit from various authorities. So I presume that Occupy Justice did respect the laws of the country. I sincerely hope they did because if they did not I for one would consider it serious provocation considering that an illegal assembly and illegal occupation of public space requires police intervention to stop a demonstration aggressively criticizing the head of police! One should never succumb to provocation!
