What is missing is an acceptable medium of exchange right now so that the little liquidity that Zimbos currently have can be used to purchase goods and services currently being produced by Zim companies without the complications of different prizes for different payment options in the market right now. And to all rightful thinking patriotic Zimboz, the rand is the best alternative at the present moment.

Well i just think its pointless to bent on party politics wen the country is on an economic meltdown. It is good that as a mother-paper you should give us your analysis and suggestions to get the country going.I remember Biti's idea of tollgates was shot-down only to be adopted later and you never gave him credit for that. His tenure as finance minister saw some economic reforms which propelled this country to better levels a fact which you will also castigate because of the source. Is is not fact that SA is our largest trading partner ?If the Americans are our role-model so where is the US dollar now?

Should Zimbabwe dare to adapt the Rand officially, note the word "officially" she would have to adhere to strict guidelines from Pretoria on how the money will be used which Mugabe and his thugs would never want. Otherwise Pretoria will not agree given the history of the Zanu PF government of money laundering and misappropriation.

The problem with the powers that be is that only their solutions work and any suggestion is rejected not on merit. When the government introduced the bond notes we all knew it was not going to work for a long time but Mangudya argued that the bond note will work at 1:1 with the US dollar and if it does not work he was going to resign. As it stands now things are not looking good and people are giving their suggestions and you think its seeking relevance. Why don't you listen to people and try out their solutions after all if its coming from us we will all make an effort to make it work instead of you imposing your solutions which always look doomed before implementation. After all things worked well during the inclusive guidance when Biti was the minister of finance so at least he knows something.

Whoever still listens to the opposition parties statements needs his or her head checked. And media houses that affords such people attention and time clearly have nothing to do. How long have these guys been screaming and ranting over this and that without making headway? I would be dumb to listen to what the likes of Tendai Biti says. Unowukura!!!

During the Kiya-kiya days when Biti was running the finance ministry our economy started to have a life. Those who are corrupt continued to abuse him. They even said MDC was limiting their ability to govern. In 2013 at the promise of 2million jobs the ruling poarty was given full custody of our country:the results are all there to see.

Oh come on Profs. Mallia. Let's not split hairs here. Barroso was enough of a gentleman to allow him to retain a sliver of honour (which Dalli went ahead and flushed down the toilet as fast as he could). There is no way Barroso would have allowed him to stay if Dalli hadn't "resigned" on the spot. And apart from all this, for all his supposed "resignation" Dalli was still considering himself an EU Commissioner and signing as such on all his correspondence for months (if not years) following his inglorious episode, so...what resignation is that?

Agreed. However, right now, it looks like Malta is only digging itself deeper into a hole rather than braving the uphill task ahead. We are collectively succumbing to the easier options rather than facing the challenges and deriving pride from overcoming them. Those who pretend to be our leaders have let us down.

01/11/2017

Edward Mallia

Edward Mallia

Of course he is, by the EU! His resignation had exactly that point in mind: the retention of a Commissioner's pension or part of it. If, as one would have thought from the high-volume claims of complete innocence, Dalli had stuck to his "guns" he would have been dismissed without any compensation.

Absolutely. This is one of the many insidious attempts to dilute freedom of speech. It is impossible to judge what is insult. It is simply too subjective. It is up to governments to rule on hate crime and the courts to try on that basis.

It's sounds like a deranged person writing this article, don't forget that John Dalli and daughters were responsible for the little ole ladies from Amerca 's life savings turning up in daughters bank account and then disappeared. Let's not forget that former Police Commissioner John Rizzo wanted to arraign Dalli for suspected corruption. Unfortunately the Attorney General did not support the commissioner. Are you sure that is how it went? Or was it the case that Dr. Gonzi's PC and AG both wanted to arraign Dalli, while Dr. Muscat's PC (1st) and AG (same as Dr. Gonzi's as Dr. Muscat has just reminded us) would have none of that?

31/10/2017

I think you've got it wrong and for the wrong reason. John Dalli resigned as that meant he would not lose his Commissioner's pension. A dismissal would have left him "penniless".

I am struggling to make sense of this incoherent, rambling piece. Is Dalli saying that it is acceptable to murder a journalist in self-defence, if one is defending one's reputation? Let's not forget that former Police Commissioner John Rizzo wanted to arraign Dalli for suspected corruption. Unfortunately the Attorney General did not support the commissioner. Then the commissioner was sacked. And now the Attorney General himself is facing loud calls for his own dismissal. Perhaps Daphne's pen wasn't poisonous at all. Someone else's, quite possibly.
